Today in BA
class we studied about the analytical tool called SPSS i.e. Statistcal Tool for
the Social Sciences. Many other tools are used such as:-
SAS
·
Minitab
·
R
·
S
·
GAMS
Data Sheet
in SPSS contains Records.
Records = Cases+Variables
Classification
of Variables
·
Category
– Have limited values. Eg. Nationality, months etc.
·
Continuous
ü Continuous – No whole numbers,
fractions allowed
ü Discrete – No fractions, only whole
numbers allowed
Classification
of data
·
Nominal
– Here numbers are only for namesake. No order is there. Eg. Mobile numbers,
numbers written on the back of sportspersons.
·
Ordinal
– These numbers have an order and cannot be assigned randomly. Eg. Number
plates on cars, classifications of education.
·
Scale
– This is to know the magnitude of difference. Eg. Salary, height, weight.
Classification
of techniques
·
1st
Level (Frequencies, crosstabs, OLAP cubes)
ü Univariate techniques. Eg. Pie charts
ü Bivariate techniques. Eg.
Correlation, T-test
·
2nd
level
ü Multi-variate techniques
Then a class
assignment was done in which our group’s null hypothesis was age at which
people get married first are mostly black people (on the basis of race).
NOTE:
Ø Null Hypothesis in case of cross tabs
is always same i.e. – “No relation between the two variables”
Ø It can be accepted or rejected based
on the significance value of Chi – square test.
Ø Chi – square test is performed to
check the dependence of the two variables. If the significance value is less
than 0.05 then there is significant relationship between the variables and
hypothesis can be rejected.
